Resurrection Day 74: Change is Risky

Have you ever noticed that most of us really don’t like change?

I used to think it was simply because it’s inconvenient, most of the time.  But now I see that it’s because change is risky.

Change always involves a risk.

When we change jobs, we risk not liking the new one.  We risk not succeeding in that new job and losing it.  Change is risky.

When we get married, it’s risky.  What if we “grow apart”?  What if they aren’t who you think they are?  What if you get divorced later?  Change is risky.

Choosing which new home to buy, new car, new city to live it, even something as simple as new running shoes…it’s all risky.  What if you don’t end up liking your choice?  It’s risky.

It’s true that change is risky, but that doesn’t negate the fact that change must occur.

One day, someone close to me asked me…if I never change for the rest of our life, would you still love me?  I said, “That’s not love.  It’s because I love you, that I want to see you grow and change.”

And that’s the truth.  The only One Who doesn’t need to change is God.  He Who was and is and is to come, never changes because He is perfect.  The rest of us need the friction and stretching of change throughout our lives.

Some of the most stable people I know, according to world standards, are the most stagnant.  They have the appearance of goodness in their habitual lifestyle, but really, they are just afraid.

We have to change and be changed.

There are certain things that we would say never need to change…our love for God, for example…but I would propose that even must face change throughout our lifetime.  Don’t we want our love to grow?  Don’t we want to discover the many facets of His love for us?

Change is risky, but necessary.

I encourage you to consider your own life today.  Do you resist change?  Do you scorn it?  The moment that habit creates a feeling of safety you can’t live without, is the moment you know you have elevated your habits to god status in your life.  Nothing should replace our dependence on God.  Nothing.

So, if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!  Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold.  We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was destined to fade away.  But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth.  And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.  Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand.  But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  So, all of us who have had the veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord.  And the Lord- Who is the Spirit makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.  2 Corinthians 3:11-18
