After worshiping with someone recently, they told me they thought the songs should just begin and end. Sung without any extra worship time within them. Just sing the song, be done and move on…the person said.
It struck me.
I said nothing.
It’s good to be provoked into remembering why something is so special and sacred to us. This comment from the person wasn’t offensive or out of order. It was their honest feeling. I knew the best thing would be to fall silent and then speak again days later…after I’d spoken with God about how best to explain…because I knew that the real problem was, they didn’t understand.
I took it to God.
He spoke.
The truth was revealed.
Worship is a conversation. We sing a written song and then we give God a chance to respond to us individually or with a prophetic utterance from within the group.
When He reminded me of my favorite part of worship…the in between…He also reminded me that many who don’t enjoy it, feel that way because they don’t know how to listen for Him.
So today I’d like to provoke you.
I encourage you to listen to some worship this week or play and sing in your home. After you have sung the written song begin to listen to heaven. What does God want to say to you? If you’ve never heard Him speak before…then before you worship, tell God you’d like to hear His voice and invite Him to speak during the song.
We should never forget that the entire point of worship is not to perform for anyone. It’s to worship God. To honor Him. We were made to worship, remember. It’s a time when we return to our origin and bring our Father the glory due His name.
He alone is worthy of praise.
I pray you have a wonderful conversation with God through worship today.
Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before Him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm 100:1-5
