The Fountain Day 344: Cleansing

Every so often I do some sort of cleanse.  It’s not a fast, it’s a cleanse.  Something to reset my body and cleanse my gut.  I do these if I start to feel sluggish and generally unhealthy, or between big holidays because of all the extra meals.

You may be wondering why I’m bringing this up…but I do have a point.

Every time I do a cleanse, I find my mind clearing up as well.  My spirit seems to become more sensitive.  I suddenly hear God better, more clearly.

I’m not really sure what causes this, but it is definitely worth it.  Don’t you think?

Have you ever done a cleanse and experienced this?  I wonder if it’s because in doing the cleanse we are partnering with the fruit of the Spirit…self-control.

Self-control is that oft avoided fruit.  I do love it though.  I love people who display it.

Whether it’s the self-control factor or something else, I highly recommend trying this out for yourself.  The cleanse.

Somehow it brings body, mind, and spirit into alignment.  When we can move our minds to a place where we are not solely focused on hunger, we find a deeper grounding within our hearts.  I often find myself filling the time I’d normally spend eating and cooking, by worshiping.

I still prepare food for my family during these times, and to be honest, that seems to be helpful for me.  Something about cooking and serving them makes me feel fuller.  It’s so strange…this dynamic.

Our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit, and as such, I believe we have a responsibility to not constantly pour junk into ourselves.  Sure, I enjoy fun food…sometimes a little too much, but I really have found the benefit of eating better.  Or at least thinking about what I’m eating…eating with purpose.

My spiritual life is the same.  I have found the One Who satisfies my every craving.  The One Who makes me feel more grounded.  The One Who brings focus to my heart.  Focus to my life.  The One Who provokes me to think about what I’m digesting into my spirit.  Consuming with purpose.  Actively thinking about what I am watching, listening to, reading, etc.

A deep spiritual life is just as rare as a person who does cleanses.  Some will and some won’t choose these things, but the ones who choose it quickly realize the benefits and keep coming back for more.

Even if you don’t do a food cleanse, I highly recommend doing an entertainment cleanse.  Take time and think about the impact of the things you’re watching, listening to, and reading.  Allow God to remove what is waste and to give peace to your heart over what is actually ok for you to use as entertainment.  I am well aware that this is not popular, but that doesn’t make it less worthwhile.  It just highlights the “narrow way”.

Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith.  You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.  He humbles those who dwell on high, He lays the lofty city low; He levels it to the ground and casts it down to the dust.  Feet trample it down- the feet of the oppressed, the footsteps of the poor.  The path of the righteous is level; O upright One, You make the way of the righteous smooth.  Isaiah 26:2-7
